Identity Theft Alert
How thieves are taking thousands out of your accounts
A new method of identity fraud has allowed thieves to steal your identity with only your cell phone and bank card. They have been able to achieve this by taking advantage of your message notification settings. Once they steal your phone and bank card they register your card on the corresponding bank app on their phone or computer. The bank then sends a one-off passcode message to your phone which pops up on the locked screen allowing the thief to put it on their device. Once this is done they have access to your account.
The best ways to prevent this are simple. One don't keep your card and phone together. Another is to change your settings to stop your messages from being read on the lock screen.
For iPhones:
Go to Settings
Go to Messages
Go to Notifications
Then scroll to Show Previews and select either the option when unlocked or never
For Android:
Go to Settings
Select Lock Screen
Select Notifications
Then select Don't Show Notifications
Once this is done your messages won't show up when your phone is locked
